Installing software

The Ubuntu Server comes with much of the software that you need already installed, but that doesn't mean that you won't need to install more.

There are a few ways to get new software onto your machine, but perhaps the easiest is using Ubuntu's package manager apt. We used apt when we were first launching the server and getting it updated. Let's use it again to install some games on our machine.

After using the Terminal on your own computer to log in to the Terminal:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt install bsdgames Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following additional packages will be installed: wamerican The following NEW packages will be installed: bsdgames wamerican 0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 not upgraded. Need to get 1094 kB of archives. After this operation, 3610 kB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

Hit [Enter] to continue, and wait a few moments while the packages are installed.

Where'd the installation go?

The games were installed into /usr/games/. If you cd into that folder, you'll see the games that were installed on the server. Type the name of any game and it will launch:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cd /usr/games ubuntu@ubuntu:/usr/games$ ls adventure bsdgames-adventure go-fish morse quiz snscore wtf arithmetic caesar gomoku number rain teachgammon wump atc canfield hack phantasia random tetris-bsd backgammon cfscores hangman pig robots trek battlestar countmail hunt pom rot13 wargames bcd cribbage mille ppt sail worm boggle dab monop primes snake worms ubuntu@ubuntu:/usr/games$ wargames Would you like to play a game? y A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. ubuntu@ubuntu:/usr/games$

Most of the games are a little more interesting than that one, fortunately.
